CONTINUOUS FIBRE REINFORCED COMPOSITES FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE SHIELDING

Abstract:

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a critical problem that arises from transmitted electromagnetic energy that disrupt the operation of an electronic device. The growing number of complex electronic devices intensifies the need for alternative and more efficient shielding solutions. Additive manufacturing (AM) emerges as a promising approach to create complex geometries using materials with high shielding potential. In this work, AM Continuous Fiber Reinforcement (CFR) process was used to produce composite specimens containing continuous carbon fibre (CCF). Different build orientations and fibre deposition strategies were explored to assess their influence on electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE). The results show that specimens printed parallel to the build platform exhibited higher EMSE, ranging from 20 to 75 dB across the entire evaluated frequency range (0.03–3 GHz), whereas specimens built perpendicularly to the building platform showed EMSE below 25 dB.
